The wife of producer Jahangir Kowsari and the mother of actress Baran Kowsari, began his career as documentary filmmaker for IRIB and after some experiences as assistant director she made her first feature film Off the Limits (1987). There is a social attitude in her works and women play leading role in most of her films and she sympathizes for them.
She’s had a serious presence world-wide with the film The Blue-Veiled which was awarded the Bronze Panther in the 48th Locarno Film Festival (1995) and some other prizes.
She has been the member of jury in several local and international festivals.

He’s known as the most intellectual and conspicuous “author” in Iranian cinema.
The main theme of his works is the history and “crisis of identity” which is related to Iranian cultural and mythical symbols and paradigms.

He’s one of the most conspicuous composers in Iranian traditional music. He’s been the conductor of the Iranian TV Symphonic Orchestra from 1973 to 1979. He’s professor of the music academies in Iran and has published many music cassettes. He has scored for some of the most important historical TV series such as Sarbedaran (1983), Avecina (1986) and Imam Ali (1996) which have been distributed in cassettes and CDs. He was the Head Production of “Film Development Company of Iran” (1974-77), produced Abbas Kiarostami’s first feature The Report (1977), Bahram Bayzai’s The Crow (1977), Khosrow Haritash’s Divine One (1976), Mohammad-Reza Aslani’s Wind and Chess (1976) and Valerio Zurlini’s Desert of the Tartars (1977 co-prod. with Italy and France). He went to France and then to Canada in 1980 establishing a distribution company and a film festival for children and young adaults in Vancouver. Farmanara came back home in the early 1990s but could make Smell of Camphor, Fragrance of Jasmine in 2000 which won several prizes from the FFF, including The Best Film and The Best Director prizes.

Since then, he paid attention to unusual rhytmic dialogs and also use of traditional settings and architecture in his films that became the characteristics of his works. Although his works did not attract international attention, but the Iranian audience praised him. His mind was occupied with making films on the basis of historical and folkloric figures. He was the art director of his films. His last film remained incomplete because of his death by cancer. Hatami made three great historical TV series which all of them are considered as eternal works in the history of Iranian TV. He immigrated to Iran in 1938. Due to his background in painting he became a set designer in theaters of Tabriz. He is known as a pioneer of set designing in Iranian cinema. He moved to Tehran in 1946 and worked in the bigger theaters. Although he had a limited experience and background in Iranian cinema, made some decorations for historical films which are among the memorable and outstanding examples. He was one of the supervisors for building a small town for IRIB as the location of historical films and TV series.

He was one of the founders of Filmmaking Department in the Institute for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults, in which he made his short films, most of them with an educational approach. His first feature film was The Traveler (1974). Although his first feature films had no commercial aspects but was considered different from the mainstream. His great internationl success with Where Is My Friend’s House? (1986), was awarded five prizes in the 48th Locarno Festival and paved the way for his other films. Abbas Kiarostami is the most prominent director who has got the most prizes in the history of Iranin cinema and has been as a member of jury in many festivals. His innovative and modern poetic narrative style has been admired by well-known world critics. He received Palme d’Or of Cannes for A Taste of Cherry (1997) and Special Jury Prize of Venice for the The Wind Will Carry Us (2000). Among the characteristics of Kiarostami’s works is paying attention to creating a calm and peaceful atmosphere and reaching a quite simple structure, as if they are documentaries and at the same time seem to be modern.

Director, screenwriter, producer. B. 1941, Tehran; started his career as assistant director and made his debut, Come Stranger, in 1968. He is the most popular director of the history of Iranian cinema among public audience. With his second film, Qaysar (1969), he caused a historical change in Iranian film industry. The film became a great success in box office and opened the way for many young, talented filmmakers who never had a chance in the industry before. His films deal with the people in the margin of the society and his anti-hero characters die at the end. Many directors of commercial films imitated his Qaysar during about 6 years, but in the last decade he focuses on young antagonists. He usually writes his screenplays, uses slang dialogs based on ordinary traditional people’s dialect. MAJIDI, MAJID

He became an international figure of Iranian cinema with his first film and received various prizes from major international festivals, such as San Sebastian, Sao Polo and Montreal. MAKHMALBAF, MOHSEN
Director, screenwriter, editor, producer. B. 1957 ,Tehran. The father of director Samira Makhmalbaf and husband of director Marzieh Meshkini; he was in prison during 1974-79 because of political activities against the Shah regime. Began his art career as writing for radio and stage, and published many short stories and plays in the early 1980s, most of which were represented on radio and stage. He made his first feature, Nasouh Repentance in 1982. After early films which he entitled them as “illustrated stories” he astounded everybody with his fifth film, The Peddler. Since then, he became one of the most outstanding and the most controversial directors in Iranian cinema. He depicts political and social themes in almost all his works, but one can observe the traces of artistic or philosophical aspects with a poetic tone. Makhmalbaf’s films were also among the most praised works of Iranian cinema in international scale and have received various prizes from different festivals. He writes the scripts of his films, edits them and has been the producer of his recent films.

NADERI, AMIR
Director, screenwriter, B. 1945, Abadan; made his debut, Adieu Friend in 1971. He began his career with still photography for some notable Iranian features. Thus, he developed his knowledge of cinema through watching films and making relationship with leading film critics and turned to directing. In 1970s, Naderi made some of the most important features of the New Iranian Cinema. In these films, he depicts the miseries of people in the margin of society. The Runner, paved a new way in his career. This film is among the first Iranian features released internationally and won the major prize of the Three Continents Festival of Nantes (France, 1986). His Water, Wind, Dust picked some international prizes, too. Naderi immigrated to the US in 1986 and is still living there. He has succeeded in making three features in the US. In some of his films, Naderi concerns himself with the character and individuality of children and young adults who appear as protagonists.

Before that, he had made short documentaries and short fiction films and worked as assistant director, most notably for Abbas Kiarostami in Through the Olive Trees (1993) which consequently boosted his career. Panahi made his first feature based on a script by Kiarostami. The White Balloon received the coveted prize, Camera d’Or from Cannes as well as other prizes from various festivals. The protagonists of his debut and second film are children. But in The Circle, through a social perspective, he is concerned with women. The Circle also won the Golden Lion at Venice.

RAD, SAEED
Actor, B. 1944, Tehran, started his career as the manager of a company for making commercial films and teasers in 1967. After a minor role in Conquerors of the Desert (1969, M. Zarrindast) he was invited by Amir Naderi for the leading role of his debut, Adieu Friend (1971). Because of his solemn, stern gaze and to some extent a rough complexion, has played the role of rebel individuals in the margin of society. He is one of the main figures in New Wave of Iranian cinema which raised in the early 1970s and faded in the middle of the decade. Rad left Iran in 1986 and lived in Canada but he returned home in 2000 to continue his career.

Actor. B. 1944, Tehran; graduated in acting from FDA, began his stage career in 1963 and film acting in 1982 with The Red Line (M. Kimiai). He is considered as one of the most prominent Iranian film stars in the last decade. He had performed in seven features when Dariush Mehrjui offered him the title role of Hamoon, which became a cult film. His performance in Hamoon was a brilliant turning point in his career. Shakibai received a Crystal Simorgh at FFF for his portrayal of title protagonist in Hamoon. His peculiar tone and voice is a privilege, used by him as a distinguished characteristic among Iranian film stars. Near the end of '80s when authorities of Iranian cinema didn't appreciate the actors very affectionately, Shakibai managed to gain a considerable attention. He has performed in some TV series, and won another Crystal Simorgh for Kimia (1995, A. R. Darvish).

TAQVAI, NASSER
Director, screenwriter, B. 1941, Abadan; graduated from the Faculty of Literature in Tehran University. After some experiences as a storywriter, he started making documentaries in 1967, some of which stand out in the history of the Iranian documentary cinema. He made his debut, Tranquility in the Presence of Others, in 1970 and from the beginning his works have always gained the attention of Iranian critics. His concern for ethnography and atmosphere of southern Iran is notable in his films. Captain Khorshid is an adaptation of E. Hemingway's To Have and Have Not. Actually most of his works have been made based on novels. The film won the 3rd prize at 48th Festival of Locarno (Switzerland) in 1988.
